Before
starting any project in your home, be sure to do your research.
• Look for companies that are Licensed, Bonded, and
Insured.
1. Licensing requires the passing of multiple state exams
and extensive criminal background checks.
2. Contractors carry a bond for the state recovery fund.
If your contractor is bonded, you may be eligible to recover
money for damages due to inferior workmanship or improperly
installed items.
3. General Liability Insurance is very important. Should
you suffer damages to your home, you must be able to recover
the funds required to repair your home. You can sue your
contractor, but chances are he won’t be able to pay
you out of his personal finances. Be sure your plumber is
insured!
• Ask for referrals.
• Google the company you are considering using. Often
times people who have had unpleasant experiences with a
company will blog about it. You can get an unscripted opinion
of the company by seeing what other people think of them.
There are several ways to check out a company. Here are
a couple of links to help you do your research:

The AZROC is responsible for the licensing of contractors.
Contractors must pass multiple state examinations and extensive
criminal background checks. If the company you are using
is not licensed, you should ask yourself why. Did they not
pass the state exams? Do they have a criminal record? Use
the following link to determine if the company you are considering
has a current license.

If you have ever been ripped off by a company, you understand
how infuriating it can be. Rip Off Report
is a website that allows consumers to document when they
have been ripped off by a company. You can do a search on
the website and see if any one has documented problems with
the company you are considering.

• Once you have decided on a company, get all bids
in writing. If you are replacing fixtures, ask to have the
brand name included in the bid.
• Ask for a time frame included in your written bid.
There is nothing worse than having a project started in
your home, and waiting weeks for it to be completed.
• If you have agreed to make a deposit, insist on
having the terms of your payments in writing on your accepted
bid. For example, have your plumber include the date, amount,
and method of payment, what the payment is for along with
his signature that he has received that payment.
